Every 2 minutes, a woman is raped in the U.S.
According to the US Department of Justice, there were an average of 223,280 sexual assaults each in years 2002 and 2003.
"Sexual assaults" are crimes categorized by the U.S. Justice department that include: rape, attempted rape, and other violent felonies that fall short of rape (which it defines as "forced vaginal, anal, or oral penetration").


In 2004 for every 1,000 persons age 12 or older, there occurred:

Rape Statistics
powercheck1.gif (542 bytes) 68% of women are raped by non-strangers
powercheck1.gif (542 bytes) 11% are raped by intimate partners (husbands, boyfriends, etc.)
powercheck1.gif (542 bytes) 7% are raped by relatives
powercheck1.gif (542 bytes) 50% are raped by friends or acquaintances

Something to think about...
Less than one-third of all rapes are reported to the authorities. This means that the statistics only reveal a very small amount of the actual rapes that occur!

Rape Situation Statistics

powercheck1.gif (542 bytes) 63% of rapes occur between 6 pm and 6 am
powercheck1.gif (542 bytes) Victims received injuries in over 47% of all rapes
powercheck1.gif (542 bytes) More than 50% of rapists were under the influence of drugs or alcohol when committing their crime.

Age Rape / Sexual Assault Statistics:

Robbery Statistics:

powercheck1.gif (542 bytes) More than 50% of robberies happened between 6 pm and 6 am.
